Panic.
That’s been the reaction of many owners to the recalls last week of 95 pet-food brands manufactured by Ontario-based Menu Foods.
As of Friday, at least 16 cats and dogs had died of kidney failure from ingesting the food, which New York State officials say was tainted with Aminopterin, a chemotherapy drug no longer used in this country. It is used as a rodenticide in China, the source of wheat gluten the company put in its foods.

After more than seven years, I am heralding the arrival of a new puppy into my household. (Actually, I bred the 8-week-old Ridgeback who I hope will grow up to be a successful little show dog like her mom and dad, so she met the world in a whelping box at the foot of my bed, along with her 13 siblings.)

One good save deserves another

When a rogue wave swept Neil Maycock out to sea 37 years ago, only the bravery of a passing stranger saved the then-3-year-old boy’s life. The stranger, a man out walking his dog, dove into the waves and - with the help of his Labrador retriever - dragged the grateful boy back to the shores of his native Great Britain.
Yesterday, fate let Maycock return the favor.
